While the game play and content is straight forward, there are some drawbacks. It is a neat feature that gives players more variety to personalize their own car with their preferred character which encourages more play time in order to get more parts. Players can earn in-game currency used to purchase pods that bring up random items, such as a unique car part per character, item boxes, decorations and paint colours even customized horns. Another mechanism that players can utilize is car customization. This part does have a very strong resemblance to the item mechanism in the Mario Kart franchise.
Players can also use items in the form of wisps to gain small speed boosts and strike their opponents. The game also comes with an Adventure Mode, which attempts to explain why these characters are racing, but it's really a glorified tutorial mode to help new players while also providing some challenges. It's not fancy but does help if needed. However, this has to be used wisely because it's not an instant win function. Players have to strategize on timing of its use, otherwise they fall of the track, thus slowing them down and wasting their boost so timing is key. Once the gauge is full, the team can activate the power boost that would have them soaring through the track at top speed and become invincible for about 10 seconds. This creates a great comeback for new players and those in higher difficulty settings. They can charge it up by sending items to other players, receive items from teammates, take down their rivals, and snake behind a teammate who is ahead of them to gain a boost of speed within a highlighted track. During the race, teammates can build up their teamwork gauge that leads to a powerful boost in speed. Over time, players learn what to do to get better but it’s a very easy lesson to learn. In fact, the game actually punishes you if you only focus on yourself while not helping your fellow teammates. The punishment is not severe, but selfish players do not score as well compared to racers who help their teammates finish faster. As long as everyone in your team gets to the goal as quickly as possible, you’ll get more points. For this game, it doesn’t matter who comes in first. In this game, players race in a team of three, each with their own attributes. One focuses on speed, another on technique, and the third, solely on power. This time, however, Sega’s latest racing title attempts to change up the racing formula even more with Team Sonic Racing introducing a new concept, that not only challenges players with new methods of winning, but also encourages team work among other players. In 2010, Sega tried again with the racing genre but this time with Sumo Digital as the developers and giving players Sega All-Stars Racing a crossover game that became such a success it spawned a sequel two years later with Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed.
Sonic the Hedgehog, the face of rival company Sega, has participated in racing games in the past, with mediocre results, to be fair.
This latest entry to the racetrack is known as Team Sonic Racing. Lately, however, some kart racing games have been successful in making a name for themselves, not only in terms of lasting appeal, but also changing the formula to make it stand up to comparisons of Nintendo’s long-lasting series. Other companies have tried to emulate this format. But Mario Kart clones haven't achieved the same longevity.

Nintendo’s Mario Kart series remains the most iconic of this genre with its recognizable cast of characters easy to learn and master game play and the overall fun it brings every time.
